AAFH SEMINAR: OCTOBER 1
The Academy of American Franciscan History will hold its first seminar
of the year on Saturday October 1 at the Franciscan School of Theology,
1712 Euclid Ave., Berkeley.
The presenter will be Lisbeth Haas of the University of California,
Santa Cruz. Her topic will be "Pablo Tac: Mission History and
Luiseño Christianity."
Lisbeth describes her presentation in these words: "Working from Pablo
Tac's manuscript, written in Rome c.1838-41, I examine Tac's
presentation of the history of Mission San Luis Rey where he grew up,
his perspective as a Quechnajuichom and Christian Luiseño, and
the interpretations of Catholicism that prevailed at the mission. The
manuscript, with it's Luiseño
vocabulary, stories, and partial Luiseño-Spanish dictionary,
offers an extraordinary source written by a native scholar. It renders
his historical perspective, and the way the Luiseño language of
his era expressed concepts of the sacred."

FUNDING FOR MISSION SAN MIGUEL RESTORATION ADVANCES IN CONGRESS
At the end of July, Sen. Barbara Boxer announced that $300,000 to begin
restoration of Mission San Miguel was in the Interior Appropriations
bill. As CMSA members are well aware, the structure was nearly toppled
by the Dec. 22, 2003 earthquake in nearby Paso Robles. County
inspectors closed the building indefinitely as a result of damage
incurred by the earthquake and related safety concerns.
Knox Mellon, Executive Director for the California Missions Foundation
said, "This funding is appropriate and well deserved. My primary
thanks goes to Senator Boxer whose absolute commitment and unrelenting
pursuit of this funding for the preservation of these historical
landmarks was essential."
The House and Senate will now have to vote on the Conference Report for
the Interior Appropriation bill before the legislation goes to the
President to be signed into law.

SONOMA HERITAGE TOUR NOVEMBER 5, 2005
The ever-active Sonoma docents have sent us the following information:
A new event, the "Sonoma Heritage Tour" is slated for Saturday,
November 5th from 1 p. m. to 9 p. m. Sonoma Heritage Tour is presented
by the California State Parks, the Sonoma State Historical Parks, Assn.
and the Sonoma Business Community.
The history of Sonoma is unique and very rich in history. This frontier
outpost was ordered built by the Mexican Government. The Mission was
established in 1823. All of the other Missions in California were built
under the direction of Spain. General Vallejo was sent to Sonoma to
build the Barracks in an effort to establish a military presence and
protect the area for Mexico. The Mexican Government believed that if a
Mission was established and protected a town or pueblo would follow.
And follow it did.
For the November 5th, Sonoma Historical Tour we are asking participants
to consider dressing in a costume appropriate from 1823 to 1900. That
could be Italian or French, Spanish or Mexican, Swiss or Frontier, or
most any other combination. Costumes don't have to be lavish. Sometimes
a hat, a scarf, a vest, a shawl, suspenders, a long skirt, what ever
your imagination would consider being worn in 1823 to 1900.
The docents hosting at the historic sites plan to wear costumes
appropriate to the period. We hope the business people will also add to
the atmosphere by wearing clothing typical of merchants in the 1800's.
The idea is to have fun dressing and come to the party.
*Historic buildings around the downtown plaza will be toured by General
Vallejo starting about 1:00.
*Restaurants are offering a "Heritage Special".
*Hotels and B & B's are offering a Heritage package.
*The Sebastiani Trolley will offer rides down Spain Street from the
winery to the Vallejo home.
*The New York Regiment of 1846 will be represented at the Barracks.
*Bob Morris's portraits of American Indians will be displayed at the
Barracks.
*With the firing of the Barracks cannon at 5 p. m. and a fanfare by the
Mariachi "Tarasco de Lorenzo Sandoval" the evening
festivities will begin.
*The Blue Wing Inn will have a room open for viewing.
*The Chapel at the Mission will be viewed by candlelight.
*The Barracks will open rooms for viewing, the bookstore, and host
light refreshments.
*The Toscano Hotel will be open and staffed by the League for
Historical Preservation.
*The League will also host at the Vasquez House.
*The Depot Museum will welcome all Tour participants.
*The Sonoma Merchants will be open and welcoming.
*At 9 p. m. the cannon will fire again and taps will be sounded.
*The evening will end when the last door closes.
