CMSA 2007 CONFERENCE AT SAN FRANCISCO: PROCEEDINGS AVAILABLE

The 2007 conference proceedings have just been published. They have been sent out to those who ordered them as part of their conference registration. (To keep costs down, we've sent them out by "media mail." This method is a bit more slow than normal mail. However, you should be receiving your copy in a week or two.)

The volume is available to CMSA members for $25.00 and to nonmembers for $30.00. Both of these prices include tax and shipping. Checks may be sent to Robert M. Senkewicz, Department of History, Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, California, 95053.

SAN FRANCISCO EVENTS AT END OF JUNE

As has been the case for the past number of years, a series of events is scheduled at the end of June to commemorate the founding of the Presidio and Mission of San Francisco.

June 26: 7 PM. Chief Marin: Leader, Rebel & Legend. Join anthropologist, archaeologist and author Betty Goerke to explore the history of Marin County's namesake and his people, the Coast Miwok. Book signing will follow. Presidio Officers' Club, 50 Moraga Avenue.

June 27: 11:00 AM. Los Californianos Founding Day Celebration at the Presidio of San Francisco. The Los Californianos Anza Commemoration Ceremony will take place at the flag pole in Pershing Square. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

June 28: 7 PM. Testimonios: Early California through the Eyes of Women 1815-1846. Rose Marie Beebe and Robert M. Senkewicz present a slide talk and book signing of their recent publication that includes testimonies from those unheard voices of pre-gold rush California women. Presidio Officers' Club, 50 Moraga Avenue. 7 PM.

June 29: 11 AM-4 PM. Family Fun! Passport Through Time. Kids! Try your hand at early California music and dance, uncover the Presidio's past with park archaeologists, and meet Ohlone and early California descendants. Experience early California rancho life and get a taste of 18th century cooking. Food will also be available for purchase. Presidio Officers' Club, 50 Moraga Avenue

June 29: 7 PM. ¡ Fandango VII ! Songs and dances of Early California . For the seventh year in a row, Coro Hispano de San Francisco, Conjunto Nuevo Mundo and friends present a family fiesta of music-making and dance from California's Hispano-Mexican era. This year's guest artists Cascada de Flores and dancers from Los Lupeños de San José. This year we celebrate the Manila Connection: Pacific Island traditions in Early California. Presidio officers Club, Moraga Ave at Argüello. Admission is free, courtesy of the Presidio trust.

June 30: 10AM-3PM. A Day at Chutchui. Mission Dolores. A celebration of the 231st birthday of San Francisco. Mass will be celebrated at 11AM. After the mass commemorative wreathes will be placed in the Mission Cemetery. That will be followed by a reception in the Mission patio. At 2 PM, Lisbeth Haas will speak on "Native Dances at the California Missions," in the old Mission.

MISSION SAN JOSÉ POST-1868 CHURCH

Tom Simondi has done research on the fate of the church which was built at Mission San Jose after the 1868 earthquake. Tom has posted the results of his research at http://missiontour.org/sanjose/christchurch.htm. Check it out!

NEW CD ON SPANISH MILITARY BUGLE CALLS

Asociación Internacional De Historia Militar, A.C. of Guadalajara has produced a new CD, entitled "Toques Militares del Ejército Borbónico, Interpretados por la Banda Militar del Colegio del Aire." The CD contains 26 bugle calls used by the Bourbon Army in the 18th century and after. Selections include "La Marcha de Fusileros" (Riflemen's March), "La Marcha de Granaderos" (Grenadiers' March), and "La Generala" (To Arms). A 16 page bilingual pamphlet by General Clever Alfonso Chávez Marín is included.
