CMSA CONFERENCE AT MISSION SAN DIEGO, FEBRUARY 17-19, 2006

The forthcoming CMSA conference at Mission San Diego promises to be an
excellent event. The planning committee, headed by Janet Bartel, has put
together an exciting conference and a series of very interesting excursions.
The conference will begin with a reception at the Mission on Friday evening
February 17. The reception and registration will begin at 5:00 PM. A brief
business meeting will occur at 6:30, followed by the keynote. The speakers
will be Bro. Bill Short, O.F.M., Nels Roselund, and Fred Webster. Their
topic will be Mission San Miguel.

Saturday will be devoted to the conference papers. The banquet will be that
evening at the Admiral Baker Clubhouse. Sunday's excursion sites include the
Presidio of San Diego, Mission Trails Regional Park, the Old Mission Dam,
and Mission San Luis Rey de Francia.

CMSA MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL FORMS IN THE MAIL

CMSA membership renewal forms are in the process of being sent out to all
whose membership will expire at the end of the year. Remember, CMSA
membership is based on a calendar year. Those whose membership expires on
December 31 will need to renew to continue to receive the Correo and the
Boletín. Please return your completed forms as soon as you can!

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO EVENTS

The San Juan Capistrano Historical Society and Mission San Juan Capistrano
have announced their joint "Trails of Discovery Series."  Scheduled events
are subject to change. Confirm by phoning the Historical Society

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 18, 2006, 10:00 AM at the Mission Barracks Gallery. Free.
"Converting California: The Challenge Posed by the Pro- and Anti-Franciscan
Literature."  Dr. James Sandos, Farquhar professor of the southwest at
University of Redlands, author, scholar on Alta California and Indian-White
relations, will share his research on California mission history, presenting
two sides of a controversial subject. A book signing will follow the
presentation.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 9, 2006, 10:00 AM at the Mission Barracks Gallery. Free .
"Prisoners of the Civil War, the Story of Two Americans ." Douglas Westfall,
historical publisher & author, presents a story of the Civil War about two
men on opposite sides and in opposite prisons, who came to Orange County to
found the same town. Taken from first person accounts. Booksigning to follow
presentation.

THURSDAY MARCH 16, 2006, 10:00 AM at the Mission Barracks Gallery. Free.
"The Influence of American History on Early California Plain Air Painting."
Painter Tim Clark will trace the cultural influence on this approach to
landscape painting. Painting exhibition in the Barracks Gallery.

THURSDAY MARCH 16, 2006,  7:00 PM. At the San Juan Capistrano Community
Center. Free.  "Ramona -History and Myth in Early Southern California." Phil
Brigandi, Orange County Archivist, has been researching and writing local
history since 1975, has served as the historian for the Ramona Pageant since
1980, and will provide compelling insights into Helen Hunt Jackson's life
and times.
