JO MORA EXHIBIT AT CARMEL MISSION

Louis Sanna from Carmel Mission writes:

Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo (Carmel Mission) is proud to host the new exhibition, "The California Mission Art of Jo Mora," from June 23, 2006 through December 31, 2006, in The Mora Chapel Museum at the Mission, 3080 Rio Road in Carmel, CA. The exhibit will feature the historic Mission-themed art work of Joseph Jacinto ŒJo‚ Mora (1876-1947), including his professional masterpiece, the Father Junípero Serra Cenotaph (1924). A cenotaph is a monument to a deceased person whose body is located elsewhere. Also featured will be rarely seen drawings and watercolors Mora created as he explored the California Missions on horseback in 1903.

The price of the exhibition is included in regular Mission fees, which are $5.00 for adults, $1.00 for children aged 6 to 17, and free for children under 5 years old. The exhibition will be open from 9:30 to 5:00 Monday through Saturday, and 10:30 to 5:00 on Sunday

Several additional examples of Mora's sculptural work can be found in other parts of Monterey County. Carmel-By-The-Sea is home to two other Mora pieces, his second tribute to Father Serra, the carved wooden statue of Serra in the Carmel Woods, and, in the El Paseo Courtyard at 7th and Dolores, a painted sculpture of two early California figures. The Salinas Courthouse is adorned with numerous decorative elements in plaster, concrete and bronze all depicting various elements of California history and all created by Jo Mora. In King City, the exterior of the high school auditorium gives viewers an opportunity to study various aspects of culture as seen through Mora's vision.

SAN CARLOS OF MONTEREY HERITAGE CENTER MUSEUM

Brother Larry Scrivani has informed us that on June 3rd at 5 pm, the parish of San Carlos of Monterey formally opened its Heritage Center. The Center is a museum of two rooms in the historic old rectory of 1904, now used for parish offices. There are currently four exhibits each combining artifacts, illustrations and interpretive text to present a different theme. The themes are: The Ohlone People, The Birth of Monterey, The Soldiers of Spain and Mexico, and The Evolution of the Royal Presidio Chapel. In addition to the Heritage Center there are docents available to lead tours of the Royal Presidio Chapel, San Carlos Cathedral. For information about hours or to arrange a tour, phone 831-373-2628.

DEVASTATING FIRE AT SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

This sad news is from Br. Tim Arthur on Junte 24, 2006.  Thanks to Mary Ayers for passing it along:

“Dear Friends,
This is just a short note to inform you that the main house at our Retreat House at San Juan Bautista burnt to the ground. This included the friars room, all the offices, conference rooms, Gift Shop, Dining Room, and kitchen were all destroyed by a fire that started around 3A.M this morning. Thank God that no one was seriously hurt. Over 100 hundred firemen battled the blaze but was an old house built in the late 1800's of wood and three stories high. It was a lovely old Victorian Home to many of us.  Please keep the friars in your prayers.

In His love,

Br. Tim”
