CMSA 2007 CONFERENCE AT SAN FRANCISCO: REGISTRATION

Registration materials for the 2007 CMSA conference at Mission Dolores in San Francisco will be sent to all members next week. Please sign up early! Conference Chair Andy Galvan and his committee have been hard at work preparing the event. It promises to be a very fine gathering. Andy is anxious for all of us to see the mission‚s new tule reed house and the museum, which has been newly renovated through a grant from the California Missions Foundation.

One of the changes that we are making for this conference is that we are inviting presenters to submit proposals for entire sessions, consisting of two or three papers. A number of people have already done so. We hope to schedule these sessions so that an opportunity for questions and discussion will be an integral part of each session. If it works, this will be one of our most interactive conferences ever! The deadline for submissions of both session proposals and individual paper proposals is November 15. Please send proposals to rsenkewicz@scu.edu.

CMSA 2007 CONFERENCE AT SAN FRANCISCO: PROCEEDINGS

One of the other changes that we will be making for this year‚s conference relates to the conference "Proceedings." This year, we will be sending the "Proceedings" out to conference attendees a few months after the conference We will be giving each presenter a month after the conference to submit their final paper to the "Proceedings" editorial staff. We hope that in this way, more presenters will be able to put their materials into formal paper form, and that presenters will also have the opportunity to revise their essays in the light of the conversations that they will have on their topics at the conference sessions. In this way, we hope to make the "Proceedings;‚ a more complete record of the conference itself, and to enhance even more the quality of the essays in the volume.

The Proceedings will cost $20 for conference attendees. CMSA members who do not attend may purchase them for $25. The "Proceedings" will be available at a later date those who are not CMSA members at a price of around $30 or a bit more.

CMSA MEMBERSHIP  RENEWAL FOR 2007

CMSA 2007 membership forms will be sent to all members in a week or two. Please renew promptly to insure uninterrupted delivery of the next Boletín. Our membership rates will remain at the same modest level for another year. We are able to keep our membership rates down because of the generosity of a number of our members who contribute at a higher rate than the basic membership level. We ask all members please to consider contributing at a higher rate than the basic membership level, if you are able to do so. Thanks!

"ROMANCE OF THE BELLS" EXHIBIT IN SACRAMENTO

Blaine Lamb informs us that the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts announces the opening of "Romance of the Bells: The California Mission in Art."  This exhibit features a rich collection of Impressionist paintings of California‚s historic missions from the Irvine Museum.

"Romance of the Bells"  blends art and education.  California artists of the late 1800s and early 1900s such as Alson Clark, Guy Rose and Joseph Kleitsch captured images of weathered adobe walls, red-tiled roofs, and tranquil rolling hills that shaped a vision of California‚s past. California‚s missions, often associated with this vision, have made a lasting effect on the artistic and social fabric of our state. Visitors to the California Museum will have an opportunity to experience history through the work of some of California‚s finest plein air artists.

California teachers are encouraged to bring their history students to the Museum during the exhibit "Romance of the Bells" for lessons on Spanish exploration of California, the creation of the California missions, and the rancho period of California. The Museum provides additional lessons on early California through the permanent galleries and through a program called "California to Statehood." For more information on our educational resources contact the education department at (916) 654-5688.

The California Museum for History, Women and the Arts is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m., and is located at 1020 O Street, downtown Sacramento. Admission is $7.50 for adults; $6.00 for seniors and students with ID; $5.00 for children 6 to 13; and under 6 is free. Group discount rates are available. For more information, visit www.californiamuseum.org <http://www.californiamuseum.org> .
