The award, named in honor of renowned historians of Western religion Leonard Arrington and Father Francis Paul Prucha, S.J., is given to "the best article on the history of religion in the West," published in 2006. This year's recipient of that award is "St. Peter the Aleut: Sacred Icon and the Iconography of Violence," by Raymond F. Bucko, S.J. Congratulations, Ray! ********************************** 2008 CONFERENCE AT TUMACÁCORI Registration forms for the upcoming 2008 CMSA conference at Tumacácori will be sent to all members in the middle of October. General information about the conference was contained in the last Correo, vol. 5 no 4. Pre-conference activities will begin, for those who can make it, on Thursday February 14 at noon with tours of San Xavier del Bac and the site of San Agustín. The opening reception will be on Friday evening at Tumacácori Mission. Presentations will be the next day at the Esplendor Resort. An abbreviated two day "Kino Tour" will take place on Sunday and Monday, February 18-19. If a sufficient number of people are willing and able to stay, a tour of the O'odham Reservation and Museum will be available on Tuesday, February 20. Please sign up soon after you receive the conference information for what promises to be a very memorable experience. *************************** NORMAN NEUERBURG LECTURE AT SANTA BARBARA MISSION ARCHIVE-LIBRARY On November 14, at 2 PM, Professor Wendy Wright of Creighton University will deliver the 2006 Norman Neuerburg Lecture at the Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library. Her topic is "Images of Mary in the Development of Southern California." The lecture will begin at 2 PM and refreshments and tapas will follow. All are welcome. ****************************** MISSION DOLORES ANNUAL PARISH FIESTA At 2 PM. on October 6, as part of the Mission Dolores Annual Parish Fiesta Norm Kidder & Jan Southways will speak on "Building the New Tule House." For more information, contact Andy Galvan at chochenyo@aol.com. *********************** MEXICAN MURALIST PROGRAM AT MISSION SANTA CLARA On October 28, at 12 PM David Magallanes Rivas of Oxnard Community College will speak on "The Life and Art of Candelario Rivas: Mexican Muralist and Painter of the Mission Santa Clara Altar Murals." The event is at noon in the Mission Church. It is free and open to the public. All are welcome! *************************** TIBESAR LECTURE: NOVEMBER 3, 2007 On November 3, Francisco Morales, OFM, Director of the Centro Biblioteca Franciscana and Centro de Estudios Humanísticos Fray Bernardino de Sahagún in Cholula, Mexico, will deliver the Tibesar Lecture in Berkeley. The lecture is sponsored by the Academy of American Franciscan History. His topic will be "The Native Encounter with Christianity: Franciscans and Nahuas in Sixteenth Century Mexico." The event will be held at 7 PM in the Bade Museum on the Pacific School of Religion Campus, 1798 Scenic Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709. For more information, contact the Academy's Director, Dr. Jeffrey Burns at acadafh@fst.edu, or 510-548-1755. *************************** SPANISH DAYS AT THE OLD RIOS-CALEDONIA ADOBESunday, October 7, 2007 will bring an exciting event to the Rios-Caledonia Adobe in San Miguel. "SPANISH DAYS AT THE OLD ADOBE", from Noon until 4 PM, will feature many colorful and interesting historically inspired events, including a program beginning at 1:00 PM featuring music from Alta California with lively traditionally costumed Spanish dancers, the "Las Contradanzas Tradicionales de Alta-California" from Santa Barbara demonstrating traditional dances from the Colonial period.Performing will be members of the New World Baroque Orchestra and soloists, native singers from the local Salinan Tribe and the Mission San Miguel Singers, all under the leadership of Director John Warren.There will be re-enactment characters from California's past, crafts of the 1850's period and demonstrations on making adobe bricks. Spanish food will be sold by the San Miguel Mission's auxiliary, with monies earned by sale of the food to go to the Mission's Restoration Fund. The event will be free to the public, with donations encouraged. All are invited. ********************************* GEIGER FELLOWSHIP AT SANTA BARBARA MISSION ARCHIVE-LIBRARY The Santa Barbara Mission Archive Library announces that the Geiger Memorial Fellowship application deadline is December 1. The purpose of the Fellowship is to support scholarly research related to the American Southwest prior to 1846, with preferential consideration being given to studies relating to Alta and Baja California. The Fellowship is open to junior scholars who are beginning careers in an academic professional institution or field. Applicants should normally hold a Ph.D. degree or the equivalent in an appropriate discipline to arrange for their research interest. However, consideration will also be given to outstanding graduate students in candidacy for the doctorate. The Fellowship includes a stipend of $2500 and requires a four week residency at the Mission Archive-Library.
